What Makes Catalytic Converters so Valuable?Converters contain Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium - which are sometimes referred to collectively as "Platinum Group Metals" (PGMs). These precious metals help convert harmful exhaust gases (carbon monoxide and nitrous oxides), into less harmful emissions (carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen gas).
Did you know that it takes about 8 tons of raw ore to yield 1 ounce of Platinum? However, you can get the same amount of platinum out of as little as 30 pounds of spent auto catalysts! Because of this, it is far more cost effective for refineries to reclaim these PGMs from recycled materials than to mine them from the earth. |
